Tamatea was a famous chief and warrior. One day, traveling the back of Porangahau, he found another tribe and had to fight against them to pass. During the fight his brother was killed. Tamatea was so grieved by the loss of his brother who remained in the battlefield for a few days. Every morning he would sit on the hill and would play a lament to what is called "koauau" or Maori flute.
